Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader LK Advani Friday said non-resident Keralites, who made huge remittances to their country, were injured in the recent "corruption, fraud and scandals" that had beset the nation.
Inaugurating the first public meeting of Jan Chetna Yatra in Kerala in Putharikandam Maidan here, Mr Advani said those who toiled in foreign countries were worried that the situation could affect their prospects.
Yatra was to remove this pessimism from people's minds and hardened their determination to combat corruption. "The government can be corrupted. There the common people and the country," he said.
He said he had seen the central government since the days of Jawaharlal Nehru to Manmohan Singh. "Never before the events of this kind that plague the state. Ministers were removed from their posts and put in jail. The action was not the result of the political executive. It was almost always the judiciary or the Auditor General's reports and controller, which lobbied the government to take measures against corruption in high public office, "he said.
Requirements White Paper
He demanded that the central government to publish a White Paper on what was done to enforce the illegal wealth, estimated 25 crore lakh, hidden away in Swiss banks and tax havens.
Under pressure from the UN Security Council, U.S. and European forces and the government of Switzerland had passed the return of illegal assets Act 2011.
By law, Switzerland would restore wealth illegally looted from other countries and deposited in various banks to the nations which make such a demand.
Germany had taken a large part of illegal deposits in this way and also expressed their willingness to share information about the Indians, who maintained such illegal deposits. If black money in India could return thus could be used to bring roads, electricity, schools, piped drinking water, hospitals, and irrigation canals for over six lakh villages.
Mr. Advani said the traumatic partition of India in 1947 had brought to India from his birthplace in Karachi. He was active in politics since 1951 and have been in Parliament for 40 years. Of all six Yatras entered into, the current corruption and black money was the most satisfactory one.
Mr. Advani began his speech by apologizing for being late. He said police had advised him to change course shortly after bomb threat in Madurai. It was recognized a rousing welcome from hundreds of BJP workers who had come from different parts of the province to hear him speak.
